So Jake has been home since Wednesday with the flu. I took him to the doctor, they swabbed his nose and confirmed the diagnosis. We started him on Tami flu and he was on the road to wellness by Wednesday night.
I let him stay home again today just to make completely sure. We had a couple of errands to run (pick up paltry paycheck, bank, grocery store) so we were out driving around.
I'm not sure what started the conversation, but this is how it ended:
Jake: Mom, are we going to get that ash mark on our forehead?
Me: Sure, we can go to the Ash Wednesday service at church next week if you'd like.
Jake: Why do we get that mark?
Me: Well, it's like a promise to God and Jesus that we remember the great sacrifice of Jesus dying on the cross at Easter time. And the ashes on the forehead show everyone we contact that we believe in Jesus.
Jake: So...does that mean we're Entrepreneurs?

I Write Sins, Not Tragedies
Happy Valentine's Day.
We had a great day.
George was up early to get to the Zachary Baptist church to open up for the baseball sign-ups. The last couple of years the baseball board has been making it a little more convenient for the citizens of Zachary by locating base ball sign up areas where the people may actually be located. The Baptist church hosts about a million of the local children in Upward Basketball,so it was very helpful to about 90% of the population of the town.
Jake played at 11:00 today. His team's not that great, but Jake plays really hard.
View the evidence:
Don't hate me if you have to take a Dramamine after these photos!
After the game, we went to Academy to get the kids new tennis shoes, then to bowling.
What a blast. Bowling has been the thing Jake has wanted to do since forever. I'm glad we finally went. George and Zac tied the first game; Jake and I came in a distant 3rd and 4th (I think I came in 4th). Then George won the other 2 games. It was a good time. George always wins...
Long ago, when we were dating, I beat him at miniature golf...I kept the score card; but I think George threw it away in embarrassment.

You Made Me Love You
...I didn't wanna do it.
Yesterday started out just like every other day.
Up around 6:15, breakfast, got everyone to school and work, came home, let Buddy in, did some laundry, Zac got home, then we went to pick up Jake at school.
We headed out to get Jake and decided that since it was a nice day, we'd leave Buddy outside while we were gone. Once we got Jake, we went in to Baton Rouge to help decorate for the Youth Mardi Gras ball. I guess we got home around 8:30 or 9:00.
The back gate was open, which was not unusual. Buddy usually gets bored and climbs the gate and opens it and goes for a run in the pasture across the street. He loves barking at and chasing the cows. He always comes back.
This time he didn't.
I got a call this morning about 7:30 from a guy who found him on the side of the road about 5 miles away from our house. Last time I took Buddy for his shots, I scratched his name and my phone number on the back of his rabies tag, knowing we'd be getting this call one day.
George went and picked up his body and we buried him in the back yard.
By this time, the kids were up and we told them. They're okay. They're already talking about what kind of dog to get next time, but I know they're sad.
Dadgum, that dog. He made me love him, even if I didn't want to.
RIP, Buddy.
